and for those without faith
an explanation is never sufficient.”

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers. By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. It marks the start of the unofficial summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.

Ascension of our Lord:  On Thursday, May 25th, the Armenian Church will celebrated the feast of the  Ascension of our Lord, Jesus Christ.  After His resurrection, our Lord remained on earth for forty days and continued to appear to His disciples and tell them about the Kingdom of  God. (Acts 1:3)  He told them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Father had promised.  That promise was the reception of the Holy Spirit which occurred ten days later at Pentecost.

“Now  having met together, they asked Him, ‘Lord, has the time come? Are you going to restore the kingdom of Israel?”  He replied, ‘It is not for you to know  times or dates that the Father has decided by His own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and then you will be My witnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judea and Samaria and indeed to the ends of  the earth.’  As He said this He was lifted up while they  looked on, and a cloud took Him from their sight.” (Acts 1:6-9)

During this forty day period between Easter and Ascension we are in a period of Feasting in remembrance of the time that our Lord remained on earth after His Resurrection.  Upon His Ascension, He left us with a specific command.

“All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to Me.  Go, therefore, make disciples of all nations; baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of  the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you.  And know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.”  (Matthew 28:18-20)

This is our mission as the followers of Christ even today.

Scripture Readings for Sunday, May 28th.

Gospel Reading
(John 12:12-23)
The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.  They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”  At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him. Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.  Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him.  So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!” Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival.  They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus. Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

Epistle Reading
(1John 5:13-21)
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.  And this is the boldness we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of him. If you see your brother or sister committing what is not a mortal sin, you will ask, and God will give life to such a one–to those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin that is mortal; I do not say that you should pray about that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not mortal.  We know that those who are born of God do not sin, but the one who was born of God protects them, and the evil one does not touch them. We know that we are God’s children, and that the whole world lies under the power of the evil one. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.

Commentary on the Ascension Gospel
(Matthew 2816-20)

At His Ascension, our Lord gave the Great Commission  to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.”   This is our commission today as practicing Christians.  During this next week analyze your lives and see how many times in the course of your day you go and make disciples, not necessarily by your words, but more importantly by the way you lead your life and by the decisions you make.
