WEEKLY BULLETIN
ALL SAINTS DAY
Tomorrow, the Armenian Church celebrates the “Feast of all saints, old and new, known and unknown.”  This is the way it is written in the liturgical calendar and it is quite appropriate that it should be expressed in these terms.  The Armenian Church actually celebrates the memory of 325 saints, 104 of which are Armenian and the rest belong to other ancient traditions.  The phrase “old and new, known and unknown” is vital to a proper understanding of sainthood.  A saint is a person, just as you and I are who, in the wisdom of the Church, has in his or her lifetime exemplified what it is to lead a Christian life.  Saints provide for us real and dynamic examples of people of all kinds who heard the Christian message, made Christ truly the frame of reference from which they lived their lives and witnessed to Him in this world of ours. But the true Christian message is that we are all called to be saints.  We are all called to witness to Christ in our daily lives, in all we do in the here and now.  Saints are people who by their very lives have become holy- have participated in the Christian life and by their thoughts, words and deeds in this world have witnessed to this reality. We recognize 325 saints in our liturgical celebrations, but the Church in all her wisdom also realizes that by its very definition there may be new saints who come forth and who may be recognized even now as well as there being many “saints” who existed or now exist but are not known.
Do you know any “saints?”- why not YOU!!!

Gospel Reading
(Luke 8:17-21)
For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, nor is anything secret that will not  become known and come to light.  Then pay attention to how you listen; for to those who have, more will be given; and from those who do not have, even what they seem to have will be taken away.”  Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd.  And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.”  But he said to them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”

Epistle Reading
(Ephesians 1:1-14)
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus and are faithful in Christ Jesus:  Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,  just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love.  He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will,  to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.  In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace  that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight  he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ,  as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.  In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will,  so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit;  this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.

Gospel Commentary
Taking “heed” to “hear” Jesus, the Word of God, brings light within the soul. It must not be covered but allowed to shine forth.  The more one permits God’s light to shine, the more light is given.  Luke does not report why Jesus’ family wanted to see Him.  His “brothers” are either stepbrothers, sons of Joseph by a previous wife (the opinion of some Church Fathers), or other relatives.  According to Orthodox theology, Jesus had no blood relatives.  Mary was “ever-virgin.” Jesus declares His true family is a spiritual one – those who hear and do God’s word.
