Feast of Holy Etchmiadzin
Father’s Day

FEAST OF HOLY ETCHMIADZIN

Tomorrow,  the Armenian Church celebrates “The Feast of the Universal Church of Holy Etchmiadzin.”  This feast is celebrated two weeks after Pentecost (the birthday of the Christian Church) and the day after the Feast of the Deliverance of St. Gregory the Illuminator from the Pit (Khor-virab).  After his emergence from the pit  (he was imprisoned for fourteen years because he refused  to worship the pagan gods) St. Gregory preached the Christian Faith to the Armenian Nation, ultimately converting the Armenian King Drtad who declared Christianity as the official religion of Armenia in 301 A.D.  After the conversion, he continued his preaching.  In a vision, St. Gregory saw the Only-begotten who, descending from Heaven, struck with a gold  hammer the place where the underground pagan  emple at Vagharshabad was located.  It was at that very spot that the Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin (which means the “Only begotten descended”) was built in 302 A.D. and stands to this day. The Feast commemorates the final eradication of paganism in Armenia and the establishment of the Holy Armenian Church and her universal authority.  On the one hand, it is the commemoration of our national Church, the assertion of its   individuality and its support by the Armenian government.  On the other hand, as part of the Universal Church, it gave form to the church which had existed for three centuries, established by the Apostles Thaddeaus and Bartholomew and based on the truth of Holy Gospels.

Father’s Day

Across the United States today is observed as Father’s Day: a chance to reflect, with gratitude, on the deeper meaning of fatherhood.  While the surrounding popular culture may sometimes fail to treat fatherhood with due seriousness, the Armenian Church accords great reverence and respect to fathers.  The greatest tribute we pay to fatherhood lies in the way we apply the word “Father” to God. Our ability to call upon Him as our Father is a privilege and blessing—beautifully conveyed in a prayer from our Divine Liturgy:  “God of truth and Father of mercy, we are grateful that you have exalted us above even the [Old Testament] patriarchs. For you were called ‘God’ to them; but you are pleased to be named ‘Father’ to us.”  The priest recites this prayer right before the congregation sings the Hayr Mer –  reminding us that it was Jesus, God’s only-begotten Son, who taught us to call God “Our Father.” And when we understand God in terms of His Fatherhood, we also understand godliness to be the duty to which all fathers are called.  This Sunday, thank the fathers who strive to provide such an example in your own life, and remember those who have departed this world in your prayers. Gospel Reading
(John 10:22-30)

At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon.  So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”  Jesus answered, “I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me;  but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep.  My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand.  What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand.  The Father and I are one.”

Epistle Reading
(Hebrews 9:1-10)

Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. For a tent was constructed, the first one, in which were the lamp-stand, the table, and the bread of the Presence; this is called the Holy Place.  Behind the second curtain was a tent called the Holy of Holies. In it stood the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which there were a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant; above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot speak now in detail.  Such preparations having been made, the priests go continually into the first tent to carry out their ritual duties; but only the high priest goes into the second, and he but once a year, and not without taking the blood that he offers for himself and for the sins committed unintentionally by the people.  By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the sanctuary has not yet been disclosed as long as the first tent is still standing.  This is a symbol of the present time, during which gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper,  but deal only with food and drink and various baptisms, regulations for the body imposed until the time comes to set things right.

Gospel Commentary

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus very plainly explains that only those who are part of His flock will really and truly know Him.  He is present everywhere and His works are in plain sight for everyone to see.  However, our ability to see them and to feel His presence in our lives depends on our commitment to Him as  Lord and Savior.         Because, “for those with faith an explanation is never necessary and for those without faith an explanation is never sufficient.”  Where do you fit in?
